Terms to Know when Discussing Insulation

R Value

R Value is technically the resistance value of insulation to heat flow from one side to the other.  So the higher the R Value the harder it is for heat to move from one side to the other

Moisture Barrier

Moisture barrier refers to material used to reduce corrosion on the surface of a material

Water Resistance

Refers to the resistance of a material to the passing of water vapor particles

Water Vapor Barrier

Refers to a material used to prevent water vapor from one side to the other

Water Vapor Barrier

Refers to a material used to prevent water vapor from one side to the other

Radiant Barrier

Used to reduce summer heat gain and reduce cooling costs. The barriers consist of a highly reflective material that reflects radiant heat rather than absorbing it. They don't, however, reduce heat conduction like thermal insulation materials.
